In Focus: the development of reading and speaking skills
Equipment: A computer, a whiteboard, the presentation «Kazakhstan is our Motherland».
Theme of the lesson: My homeland is Kazakhstan.
Aims:
• to recapitulate the words on the topic and grammar
(Passive Voice);
• to practice reading the text for the information;
• to develop reading, listening and speaking skills;
• to bring up patriotism and love for the Motherland;
• to teach the children to help each other.

1. Organization moment: Good morning. Today at the lesson we’ll speak about Kazakhstan, our Motherland. You’ll be able to read the text, to listen to the song and to speak about our country. You’ll work in four groups. I want you to remember the rules of our English lessons. Look and read after me all together:
1. Be active!
2. Be friendly and tolerant!
3. Help each other!
4. Talk English all the time!
First of all answer my questions.

What part of the country do you live?
What can you say about the geography of the country?
You should recapitulate some words to tell more about our Motherland.
3. Recapitulation of the words on the topic.
a). Match the word and its definition:
1).area a. a part of a place or a region of a country used for special purpose.
2).agriculture b. a line along or around with another country or area.
3).border c. the number of people living in a particular area.
4).independent d. useful things that a country or a person has and can use to increase the wealth.
5).reservoir e. a large amount of something that is available to be used.

8).resources h. farming which means growing things and keeping animals.

b). Write 3 forms of the verbs:

4. Grammar revision Passive Voice.
a). Let’s recapitulate English grammar. Do you remember how Passive Voice is formed? Look here, please:
Passive Voice = be + V3
Present Simple =am, is, are + V3 (e.g. Kazakhstan is situated in the Central Asia.)
Past Simple = was, were + V3 (e.g. Akmola was renamed Astana in 1998.)
b). Look at the table and make up as many sentences as you can.
Example: Kazakhstan is populated by people of different nationalities.

6. Reading of the text «Kazakhstan»
a). There are some key words for the text. They are boldfaced in the reading. Pronounce them after me and discuss their meaning:
Mutual is shared by two or more people.
Hospitality means friendly and generous behaviour towards guests.
National is connected with a particular nation.
Flora means all the plants growing in a particular place.
Fauna means all the animals living wild in a particular place.
b). Guess the meaning of the words. Look them up in the dictionary if necessary:
copper oil natural gas gold silver iron lead nickel tin uranium zinc
c). Read the text and try to remember as much information as possible.
Kazakhstan (Part 1)
The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in the Central Asia. Kazakhstan was established as the republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991. The country is the second largest of the former Soviet republics with a total area of over 2753000 square kilometers. Its population is about 16 million. The population mostly lives in towns and large villages.
Kazakhstan borders China, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kirgizia. There is a long border coast line on the Caspian Sea in the Southwest. Kazakh is the state language of the country, but it is not the only language which people speak in the country. Russian is the language of mutual communication among the people of different nationalities. Other languages are spoken there too.
Astana is the capital of the Republic. It is situated in the central part of the country. Almaty was the capital until December 1997, and then it was moved to Akmola, 850 kilometres to the north-west. In May 1998 Akmola was renamed Astana, the Kazakh word for capital. The largest cities are Almaty, Karaganda, Shimkent, Pavlodar and Kostanay.
There are many rivers and lakes in Kazakhstan. The four rivers are the main resources of water in the country. They are the Irtish in the east, the Syr-Daria in the southwest, the Ili in the southeast, and the Ural in the northwest of the country. The largest lakes are the Balkhash, the Zaysan, the Ala-Kol, and the Tengiz.
The climate of the country is strongly continental. It is cold in winter and hot in summer. Rain usually falls in spring and in autumn. Snow falls in all areas but not at the same time. In the south snow falls in November or December, in the north it falls as a rule in October or November. The flora and fauna of the country are different. They depend on the climate of the area. They are the richest in the south and poor in the north.
The country is rich in mineral resources such as copper, oil, natural gas, gold, iron, lead, nickel, silver, tin, uranium and zinc. Agriculture takes a very important sector in the national economy. The people grow wheat, millet, corn and cotton. Peaceful and generous, the land of the Kazakhs has always been famous for its hospitality. People of Kazakhstan are happy to share that famous hospitality and to show the visitors the Alatau mountains with famous Medeu; the singing sands of the Altyn Emel National Park, Kapchagai – reservoir on the Ili river, the lakes and pine forests of Kokshetau; and Akhmed Yassaui Mausoleum in Turkestan, a lot of places of interest in Astana. Kazakhstan is the world’s ninth largest area, has many beautiful places and rich culture.
7. Checking comprehension.
