- Hello, my dear students. How are you? Today I’m a little bit
down because yesterday my friend called me and said that she felt upset and
disappointed. She doesn’t understand her son. They always quarrel.
Now I am thinking what piece of advice I can give her in order to help her
to be a friend to her son. Could you help me?
-Let’s play a game Yes\No division.
I will read some statements. If you agree–you go to the YES section; If you
disagree- you go to No statement.
I love my parents.
My parents understand me.
I hate being in the house alone with my younger brother or sister.
My parents and I are friends.
I have my own room.
I have a quarrel with parents.
-How many times did you answer Yes/No?
- Look at the screen. You see some pictures. What ideas do you have
looking at these pictures?
( slide 1)
-What
do you think our theme of the lesson will be?
-What
do you think our main tasks will be? (to find answer to the questions……)
Today we are going to speak about generation gap.
|
|
II.
III.
-
Now, listen to a song about the generation gap and answer the question:
-
What is a generation gap?
-What
life situations can be explained by generation gap?
- What can make you nervous, annoyed and
disappointed? Class Survey.
-
You get individual sentences to ask their classmates.
-
Then share their results in groups of 3-4 people.
-
Say what surprised you most in the answers of your classmates.
|

|
Let’s divide
into 3 groups. Each group gets a text. Read it and find the reason of the
problem
-
Working in groups write out the reasons of students’ conflicts.
-
Make a scheme. What can cause family
conflicts?
-
Choose a speaker and present your results.
-
What is the same in all these problems?
Misunderstanding (generation gap)
The adults don’t
accept their children’s values. The young can’t accept the values of their
“fathers”. All these differences generate a generation gap when the young and
adults do not understand one another.
- What should we
do to avoid conflicts?
-
Read what a talk show host is saying about conflicts. Ex. 27 p.110
and fill the table ex.28 p. 111
Summing up.
- What is necessary to avoid
misunderstanding?(mutual love)
- Look through the results of the survey
among the students of our school and make rules for parents.
The question under discussion was: “Do
your parents often say you ‘I love you?”
- According to the survey among young people about expressing love in their
families
- 1% noticed that their parents say each other “I love you, my honey” in
front of their children
- 2% say that their parents say this phrase in front of their friends.
- 97% prefer not to show their feelings.
-
Work in groups and present your results.

What conclusion
have we come to? What is the main idea of our lesson? (Be tolerant to each
other.)
Ok, I can give
my friend some piece of advice.
Let’s build a
bridge between parents and children.
You have some
cards on your tables with words and phrases. Take these cards and build a
bridge.
Tolerance is the
only way to bridge the gap of the generations. All obstacles will be
overcome and all the gentle words will be found. And this cruel world will
turn to you with a kind smile. Your mother’s smile, your father’s smile, your
smile…
Let’s evaluate
your work today. You have cards on your table.
Thanks for the
lesson. Your homework is p.117 № 50.
Good luck! See
you next time!

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I am prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I am a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I am afraid that’s all we have got
You say you just don’t see it
He says its perfect sense
You just can’t get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
Its too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye
My parents went away on holiday recently, so I decided to dye my hair. I am
blonde and I dyed my hair black. Now it looks awful and I don’t know what to
do.
A couple of days ago my parents came home and my Mum saw my hair, went
completely mad. Now, as a punishment, she says I can’t dye it back. What
should I do?
Lucy, 15
I have started thinking about animal rights and now I am a vegetarian. My
problem is that my parents are furious. My Mum doesn’t cook anything different
for me, so every night all I eat is apples and bread and cheese. I don’t think
it is fair. Why can’t she cook me something tasty?
Michelle, 14
Hi. My name is Helen. I’m 16.I have a
problem with my mum. She doesn’t like my boyfriend. She doesn’t trust him and
doesn’t let me to hang out with him. I’d like that my mum respect my choice. I’m not a child anymore!
Hi!
I’m Jess. My father forgot about me! I understand that it’s very
difficult to find a well-paid job. My dad has one and he has to work hard and
little
time
is left to spend with me. I don’t even remember when he
talked to me last time. It’s not right I think!
Read Sasha’s letter to the youth magazine
“Shout”
One of the worst things about my house is
the lack of privacy. If I disappear into my room for some peace, it’s
guaranteed that someone will come after me, wanting to know what I am up to.
The thing is because I share a room with my little sister, I can’t just shut
the door, and keep everyone out. She’s always complaining that’s it’s her room,
too. Even worse, it means nothing is safe. I guess she goes through all my
stuff, mucks about with my toiletries, and eats the sweets I keep in my room.
If I want to keep anything secret I have to use lock.
I don’t know who I dislike more, my elder
brother, who’s sixteen, or my younger one, who’s eleven. My older brother is a
total creep. He pushes me around a lot and is always making nasty little
comments about me. I hate being in the house alone with him. My little brother
is just a geek. He asks me embarrassing questions about boys and stuff, and
always shows me up in front of my friends. If I’m on the phone to one of my
friends, he picks up the extension and listens in.
Although I’m 15, my parents treat me like
a baby. They don’t let me out during the week and if I want to go to a friend’s
house at the weekend, they phone up her parents and ask what time I’ll be at
home. Dad always asks me about boys, warning me that I’m not allowed to go on
real dates. He keeps nagging me about homework and studying. He thinks I/m lazy
when I sit watching the telly at night.
The other thing that bugs me is that I’m
treated like an unpaid slave in the house. I have to do the dishes, help with
ironing… I wouldn’t object to this if everyone in the house did their fair
share, but my brothers only keep there room clean, and my sister just acts like
a baby. Mum tells me that she needs the help and I’m the best at doing
housework, but that’s because I’m the only one who does it!
I’m going to leave home as soon as I’m old
enough. It would be great if I could get a job and a flat when I leave school.
I wish I just had one tiny room of my own. My mates always say that I’ll miss
my family once I leave , but I doubt that!
