Read the text «THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA»
The United States of
America, or the
USA, the US, the States, or America, is one of the biggest countries in the
world. It is situated
in the central part of the North American continent. Its area of the United States
(including the District of Columbia) is about 9 million square kilometers.
The USA is the 4th
largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China. It occupies the
central part of the North American continent. The country is washed by 3
oceans: the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific. The main land stretches from the Pacific
to the Atlantic Ocean, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. It borders on Canada in the
north and Mexico in the south and has a sea-border with Russia. It also
includes Alaska and Hawaii. The
USA is separated from Canada in the north by the 49th parallel and the Great
Lakes, and from Mexico in the south by a line following the Rio Grande River
and continuing across the highlands to the Pacific Ocean.
The United States of
America is a
democratic
federal republic, consisting of 50 states including the District of Columbia, where the
capital of the country is situated. Outlying areas include Puerto Rico, American
Samoa, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. The northern boundary is partly formed
by the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River; the southern boundary is partly
formed by the Rio Grande.
The USA has thousands of lakes of
all kinds, with
the Great Lakes included.
The Great Lakes make up the largest group; they are the greatest collection of
fresh water lakes in the world with the total area equal to that of Great
Britain. They are Lakes Huron, Erie, Ontario, Michigan, and Superior.
Here the famous Niagara Falls precipitate from the height of 50 meters.
Among salty lakes the Great Salt Lake in Utah and the Salton Sea in California
are the most famous. They are rich in salt (6,000 million tons).
There are also many
rivers on the US territory. The longest
rivers of
them are the Mississippi (7330
kilometers), («the father of waters»)
the longest river in the world, the Missouri,
(1,600 kilometers), the Colorado wild, restless and angry, the Columbia
full of quiet dignity and the Rio Grande (3,200 kilometers), a national
boundary between the USA and Mexican sizes. Also rivers are the Snake, the Platte, and the Hudson, and some others.
The largest state is
Alaska. The Colorado forms the Grand Canyon, which strikes one's imagination as
a fabulous phenomenon of nature. Its perpendicular walls go up to 1,500 meters
above the river level.
On the US territory
there are mountains and lowlands. The highest mountains are the Rocky
Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak is
Mount McKinley (6,000 meters), is located in Alaska. As compared with the Appalachians
in the east, the Rocky Mountains are sharp and rugged, over 4,000 meters
high, rich in gold, copper, lead, silver and other minerals.
Americans are made up
from nearly all races and nations. The
population of the United States of America is about 250 million people, who are
called Americans. Most of the people live in towns and the population of the
countryside is becoming smaller and smaller.
The
national symbol of the USA is its national flag «Stars and Stripes»,
having 50 white stars and 13 white and red stripes on its field, symbolising
the number of the original and present day states. The union was formed in 1787 when
the original thirteen states being the Thirteen Colonies along the Atlantic
Seaboard united. The last two states to be admitted to the Union were Alaska
and Hawaii.
Officially the country comprises
50 states and one District of Columbia.
Alaska and Hawaii are not connected to the other states. The states differ in
size, population and economic development. Each state has its own capital.
Washington DC (District of
Columbia) is the capital of the country and the seat of the government. It is situated on the
banks of the Potomac River.
It was named honour the fist President George Washington. The city was
founded in 1791. There
are many large cities in the country: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago,
Philadelphia, and Detroit, San-Francisco, Cleveland and some others.
The USA is a highly developed
industrial state. Its agriculture is also highly mechanized. There are
coal-mines in the Cordillera Mountains, in the Kansas City region. Iron is
mined near the Great Lakes. The USA has rich oil-fields in California, Texas
and some other regions. It occupies one of the first places among the countries
of the world for production of coal, iron and oil.
The USA has a highly developed motor-ear industry. It would be no exaggeration
to say that cars have become the symbol of American way of life. The vehicles
produced at such companies as Ford and the General Motors are known world-wide.
The motor-car industry is concentrated in and around Detroit. Ship-building is
developed along the Atlantic coast and in San Francisco. The textile industry
is to be found in the north-east and in the south of the country. The USA has a highly developed railway system.
It also has the best network of roads in the world. They are called highways.
Who discovered America?
In 1492 three
ships- the "Santa Maria”, the "Pinta”, the "Nine” under Columbus
landed the continent.
In 1507 Amerigo Vespucci explored the area of South America and introduced a
new land to the world. This continent was called after him - "America». Christopher Columbus sailed four times across the
Atlantic Ocean to explore the America.
