Kazakhstan.
The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in the centre of Eurasian continent.
Kazakhstan was established as the Republic of Kazakhstan in December
1991.The country is the second largest of the former Soviet republics
with a total land area of over 2753000 million square kilometers. Its
population is about 17 million. The
country’s principal ethnic groups include Kazakh (44%), Russian (36%),
Ukrainian (5%), German (4%), Uzbek and Tatar (2%), Belarussian and Azerbaijani
(1%) and other (5%).The
population lives mostly in towns and cities and large villages. Kazakhstan is
the largest state in the Central Asia. It extends some 1900 kilometers
from the Volga River in the West to the Altai Mountains in the East and about
1300 kilometers from the Siberia plain in the North to the Central Asia deserts
in the South. Kazakhstan borders with the Russian Federation to the north and
north-west; to the east with China and to the south with the central Asian
republics of Kirgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. There is also a long
border coast line on the Caspian Sea in the Southwest.
The Ural River flows through the western portion of Kazakhstan to the Caspian
Sea. The central region of the country includes the Kazakh Steppe to the north
and deserts of central Asia in the south-west. The Altai mountains can be found
in the east.
The landscape of Kazakhstan is a diverse one. It is bordered on the south,
southwest and east by the Tien Shan, Tarbogatai and Altai mountains. On its
west the Caspian Sea is the home of sturgeon and Kazakhstan’s oil reserves. In
the desert area of the southwest in the drying Aral Sea. In the steppes of Sary
Arka the Balkhash lake is located. Its eastern part is fresh whereas in the
west the water is salty. The largest lakes are Alakhol, Tengiz and Zaisan and
the lakes are remarkable for their beauty. In the north, over eighty picturesque
lakes lost among the pine forests of Kokshetau. The Syrdaria, Ural, Ishim,
Tobol, Ertis, Illi and Charyn run wide over the plains. The four rivers are the
main resources of water in the country. They are Irtish,in the east,
Syrdaria in the southwest, Illi in the southeast and Ural in the northwest of
the country. The flora and fauna of the country are different. They depend on
the climate of area. They are richer in the south and poorer in the north.
The
climate of the country is strongly continental. It is cold in winter and hot in
summer. Rain usually in spring and autumn. Snow falls in all but not at the
same time. In the south snow falls in October or November, in the north it
falls as a rule in September or October. Sudden cold winds and snowfalls in
winter often cause troubles for people. In spring green grass and flowers of
different colours cover flat lands and hills.
The largest cities are Almaty, Karaganda, Shimkent, Pavlodar and Astana. The
largest city of Kazakhstan is Almaty which lies to the south-east of the
country near the border with Kirgyzstan and China. Almaty was the capital until
December 1997 then it was moved to Akmola, 850 kilometers to the north-west. In
May 1998 Akmola was renamed Astana, the Kazakh word for capital. Astana
is situated in central part of the country.
Peaceful and generous, the land of the Kazakhs has always been famous for its
hospitality. And it is not by accident, located on the crossroads of two
ancient cultures-Europe and Asia.
Today residents are happy to share that famous hospitality and to show the
visitors the Alatau mountains with famous Medeu; the singing sands of the Altyn
Emel National Park; Kapchagai-reservoir on the Ili river, the lakes and pine
forests of Kokshetau; and Akhmed Yassaui Mausoleum in Turkestan, a lot of
places of interest in Astana. Kazakhstan, with the world’s ninth largest area,
has many such beautiful place and a rich culture.
Kazakhstan has well-developed heavy industry in many cities and towns. As the
result of the development of heavy industry the country suffers serious
environmental problems. Agriculture takes a very important sector in the
national economy. The people of the country grow wheat, millet, corn and
cotton. The country is rich with mineral resources such as copper, gas, iron,
lead, nickel, silver, tin, uranium and zink with deposits of oil and natural
