IV. Answer

1. When did he
realized that he was born for dancing?
2. Why was
his study at the ballet studio of the Bashkir theatre a very hard experience?
3. What happened
to him after he graduated from the choreography school?
4. What was the
basis of his conflicts with the Kirov theatre?
5. What were the
rules of the Soviet actors’ behaviour abroad and how did R. Nureyev break them.
Rudolf
Nureyev is a known all over the world as a great ballet dancer. He was born in
a train when his mother and three sisters were going to the Russian Far East to
join their father, a military man. During the Great Patriotic War the family
was evacuated to Bashkiria, first to a small village and later to Ufa. The life
was full of hardships, there was no food and the only treat was
potatoes.
His
calling became apparent very early, at
the age of six, when he came to a ballet in the Bashkir theatre. There was “A Crane’s
Song” on which Zaituna Nasretdinova, a remarkable Bashkir ballerina, as
a star. When he watched the ballet dancers and admired them he realized
that he was born for dancing.
He
started his first dance classes at the age of ten with a professional ballerina
Anna Ivanovna Udaltsova who was a well-educated woman: she knew three foreign
languages and got her pupils accustomed not only to dances but also to
music and literature.
She
recognized Rudolfs unique talent for dancing at once and called him a future
genius.
The
next step in Rudolf’s dancing career was a dancing circle at the House of
Pioneers. Here for the first time Rudolf knew the happiness of performing to
the audience at the concerts.
In
1953 a ballet studio was opened at the Bashkir
theatre. As a uniquely talented boy he was invited there. His study at
the studio was a very hard time because after four hours of training he had to
go to a secondary school. He was a soloist and was even paid a small salary.
During
the Ten-Day Bashkir literature and Art Festival in Moscow in 1955, his dancing
in “A Crane’s Song” was noticed and he received an invitation to study
at the best choreography school in Leningrad.
Rudolf
was industrious and patient in his study. Besides he absorbed everything
he saw and heard watching brilliant pictures in the museums and listening to
famous performers’ concerts at the Philharmonic.
After
graduating from the choreography school he was admitted to the
celebrated company of the Kirov theatre (now the Mariinsky Theatre).
He
became a soloist at the theatre at once. But his work there was full of
conflicts because his talent was too unusual and his character too independent.
His individuality failed to follow the official style of behaviour in the
Soviet Union. Here was the source of a profound conflict between
individual and society. It deepened during the tour of the Kirov theatre in
Paris in 1961.
Rudolf
Nureyev dancing was a triumph, he starred in all the performances. But he broke
the rules of the Soviet actors’ behaviour abroad: it was forbidden to
walk along Paris alone, but only in threes or fours. Rudolf often visited the
Louvre, made friends with French people, was invited by them everywhere.
When
the company was to move to London for the next stage of their tour ______________.
Rudolf realized with a shock that it meant punishment: prohibition of
foreign tours and work as a soloist dancer. And Rudolf decided to make a decisive
step in his life – _______________
Nureyev
______________ to the development of ballet in France, the Netherlands,
England and the USA. He worked as a dancer, a director, a choreographer
and later as an orchestra conductor. Any activity of his __________.
He
died in Paris in 1993, but he will remembered as one of the greatest dancers
ever.
Since
1993 ballet festivals have been held yearly in Ufa in memory of Rudolf Nureyev.
