The Twist was a dance inspired by rock and roll music. It became the first worldwide dance craze in the early 1960s, enjoying immense popularity among young people and drawing fire from critics who felt it was too provocative

Who Invented the Twist?

No one is quite sure who actually started swiveling their hips in this manner; some say it might have been part of an African dance brought to the United States during the slavery era. No matter where it started, it was musician Hank Ballard who first made the dance popular.

Hank Ballard (1927-2003) was an R&B singer who was part of the group called the Midnighters. Ballard wrote and recorded the song, "The Twist," after seeing some people twisting their hips while dancing. The song, "The Twist," was first released on the B-side of Ballard's single "Teardrops on Your Letter" album in 1958.

Chubby Checker's Twist

It was Dick Clark, famous for his show American Bandstand, who thought that a new singer could make the song and the dance even more popular. Thus, Clark contacted local Philadelphia recording label Cameo/Parkway in the hopes that they would record a new version of the song.

Cameo/Parkway found Chubby Checker. The youthful Chubby Checker created his own version of "The Twist," which was released in the summer of 1960.

On August 6, 1960, Chubby Checker sang and danced his version of "The Twist" on Dick Clark's Saturday night program, The Dick Clark Show. The song quickly hit number one on the charts and the dance swept around the world.

In 1962, Chubby Checker's version of "The Twist" again hit number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, becoming the second song to ever be number one on two separate occasions (Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" was the first). In total, Checker's "The Twist" spent 25 weeks in the top ten.

The dance would come to be seen as emblematic of the early 1960s in later years, with popular songs, television shows, and movies likely to reference it when they wanted to convey the spirit of that time period.

In 1993, a film by Ron Mann called Twist was a documentary about the craze. Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction featured John Travolta and Uma Thurman dancing the Twist to Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" as part of the Jack Rabbit Slim's Twist Contest. In Spider-Man 3 (2007), Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson dance to "The Twist." In a Season One episode of Mad Men ("The Hobo Code"), Peggy Olsson and several other employees of Sterling Cooper dance to Chubby Checker's "The Twist." Season One takes place in 1960, when Checker's version first became a hit.

How to Do the Twist

The Twist dance was easy to do, which helped make it so popular. It was usually done with a partner, although no touching was involved.

Basically it's a simple twisting of the hips. Some describe it as if you are pretending to stamp out a fallen cigarette or drying your back with a towel.

The dance was so popular that it inspired additional new dances such as the Mashed Potato, the Swim, and the Funky Chicken.

The Twist is a dance move which started in the1960s and became a craze all over the world. It is easy, fun and can be a good waist exercise! Learn the twist dance with these simple moves.

The step involved in dancing the Twist are as follows:

Step 1: Just as you unscrew a bottle cap, twist your waist, hips and legs from left to right. Keep your arms stationary and move on the balls of your feet.

Step 2: If you can, squat to the dance floor as you twist and move back up. You can twist with different speed and intensity, according to the rhythm of the music. You can also jump in the air slightly, and bend one leg to add style.

Step 3: Stand with your feet one or two feet apart. Your right foot should be slightly further forward than the left. You should shift your weight from your right leg to your left as you twist.

Step 4: As you twist, lean your body forward towards the front leg and then bend backwards shifting your weight on the back leg, as you continue to twist.

Step 5: Hold your arms away from the body, slightly bend at the elbows. The arms help to twist your body side to side.

Цель мероприятия: Развитие интереса к культуре и традициям страны изучаемого языка.

Задачи мероприятия:

Практические:

  • Учащиеся смогут извлечь нужную информацию из текста для последующего выполнения упражнений;

  • Учащиеся смогут обменяться мнениями по теме и выразить его;

Воспитательные:

  • Прививать любовь к традициям и обычаям страны изучаемого языка;

  • Повышать интерес к изучению английского языка.

Развивающие:

  • Развивать языковые способности: языковую догадку, анализу и классификации, логическому изложению мысли;

  • Формировать у учащихся чувство уверенности в себе как основы для проявления индивидуальных способностей и особенностей;

  • Развивать у учащихся воображение, произвольную память, внимание;

  • Развивать у учащихся навыки общения, умение работать в паре, группе;

  • Развивать общую языковую культуру;

  • Формировать адекватную самооценку в ситуации успеха (неуспеха).


Используемые педагогические технологии, методы и приемы:

Технологии: ИКТ, развивающие, здоровьесберегающие.

Методы: информационно-рецептивные, репродуктивные, частично-поисковые, , систематизирующие, контролирующие

Формы организации познавательной деятельности: использование игровых технологий, интерактивное обучение, групповая работа учащихся.


Средства обучения: компьютер, мультимедиа-проектор, раздаточный материал.


Продолжительность урока: 45 минут и более ( зависит от желания танцевать).

I want you to divide into two teams, choose the leader of your team and name it.

Учащиеся делятся на 2 команды, выбирают лидера и дают название своей команде.
