ART IS LONG. LIFE IS SHORT

I. Listen to my story and answer the questions.

Theatre, cinema and TV films have become an important part of our life.

Theatre is a wonderful combination of arts. Cinema is a marvelous invention

of the 20 th century. At theatres people can see dramas, tragedies, comedies, operas, ballets, puppet-shows and other performances.

The cinema (or movies as Americans call it) is the most popular form of

entertainment.

In the cinema you can see all kinds of films from the earliest Charlie Chaplin

comedies to popular science films, including love stories, musicals, comedies,

detective films, and, of course, feature films.

Not so long ago people went to the cinema and theatre frequently, but now

they prefer to stay at home and watch video and films on TV.

Answer the questions :

1. What is the most popular form of entertainment in the USA and in the other

countries?

2. What can you see at theatres? 3. What films can you see in the cinema?

4. Do people prefer to stay at home now or to go to the cinema?

II. The world capital of filmed entertainment Los Angeles has been a lot of things over the past 100 years.

In 1911 the first studio appeared in Hollywood. Hollywood got the name of the factory of dreams. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Paramount, United Artists, Universal are film companies in it. Columbia Pictures and Warner Brothers are American film companies. Movies (films), including those on video-cassettes, remain the most popular art form in the world. There are some film genres developed in all the countries. Guess them listening to the following:

P1. 1) Charles Spencer Chaplin became the most widely recognized figure in the world. He emphasized the development of character and plot structure, in contrast to the simple reliance on gags and gimmicks. (comedy).

P II. 2) A film about life in the American West in the past was the first American genre to be developed and has remained a staple of the American motion-picture

art and industry. (Western)

P III. 3) They have evolved into a major American genre, since wars have occupied so much of contemporary American history. The Second World War has been the subject of the greatest number of American films in this genre.

(War films)

P IV. 4) Horror films (thrillers)/ In the 1920s the creation of a monster who gets out of control or is coming to life from non-human beings who survive by killing the living provided the basic story lines of countless films. These films as a genre is associated with the name of Alfred Hitchcock.

PV. 5) These films include first of all the James Bond series. Hitchcock’s films of this genre feature ordinary people who accidentally become involved with spies or other evil doers. (Detective and spy films)

P VI. 6) These films increasingly suggested that the dangers of the future stemmed from what human beings were doing in the present. (Science fiction)

The conclusion of the lesson.

At our lesson we’ve talked about cinema and theatre in our life. We’ve known about cinemas, actors, film corporations and theatres in Britain, Russia and in the USA. But I think the pupils from your form prefer to watch films on TV and video. There is no theatre in our town and the best way of spending our free time is going to the cinema. I think this lesson was very interesting for you.  Thank you for your work at the lesson. The lesson is over.
