Тема урока : “What Do You  Know  About Cinema  and Theatre ?”

 

Цели:

познавательный аспект – знакомство с различными жанрами кино, с историей возникновения театра;

развивающий аспект – развитие дедуктивного мышления, воображения, внимания, способности к систематизации;

воспитательный аспект – воспитание убежденности в приоритетности общечеловеческих ценностей;

учебный аспект- формирование лексических и грамматических навыков

говорения;

сопутствующая задача – развитие умения аудировать  с целью извлечения информации.

Речевой материал: лексика и грамматика предыдущих уроков.

Оснащение урока: таблицы, карточки, мультимедиа.

1.     Вступительное слово учителя

 The  theme  of our lesson is : “What Do You Know About Cinema and Theatre?”

     Today we have our conclusive lesson on topic. We’ll know many interesting facts connecting with our topic. We’ll exchange our opinions  about this theme.

We’ll know about theatrical genres and about films of different genres, about cinema and theatre in the UK, in the USA and in Russia, about actors, actresses

and film producers.

 

                            ART IS  LONG. LIFE IS  SHORT

 

   I.  Listen to my story and answer the questions.

       Theatre, cinema and TV films have become an important part of our life.

       Theatre is a wonderful  combination of arts. Cinema is a marvelous invention

of the 20 th century. At theatres people can see dramas, tragedies, comedies, operas, ballets, puppet-shows and other performances.

       The cinema (or movies as Americans call it) is the most popular form of

entertainment.

        In the cinema you can see all kinds of films from  the earliest Charlie Chaplin

comedies to popular science films, including love stories, musicals, comedies,

detective films, and,  of course, feature films.

         Not so long ago people went to the cinema and theatre frequently, but  now

they prefer to stay at home and watch  video and  films on TV.

          

 

 

Answer the questions :

1. What  is the most popular form of entertainment in the USA and in the other

countries?

2. What  can you see at theatres?   3.   What films can you see in the cinema?

4. Do people prefer to stay at home now  or to go to the cinema?

   II. The   world capital of filmed  entertainment Los Angeles has been a lot of things over the  past 100 years.

        In 1911 the first studio appeared in Hollywood.  Hollywood got the name of the factory of dreams. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Paramount, United Artists, Universal are film companies in it. Columbia Pictures and Warner Brothers are American film companies. Movies (films), including those on video-cassettes, remain the most popular art form in the world. There are some film genres developed in all the countries. Guess them listening to the following:

P1.    1) Charles Spencer Chaplin became the most widely recognized figure in the world. He emphasized the development of character and plot structure, in contrast to the simple reliance on gags and gimmicks. (comedy).

P II.  2) A film about life in the American West in the past was the first American genre to be developed and has  remained a staple of the  American motion-picture

art and industry. (Western)

P III. 3) They have evolved into a major American genre, since wars have occupied  so  much of contemporary American history. The Second World War has been the subject of the greatest number of American films in this genre.

P IV. 4)  Horror films (thrillers)/ In the 1920s the creation of  a monster who gets out of control or is coming to life from non-human beings who survive by killing the living provided the basic story lines of  countless films. These films as a genre is associated with the name of Alfred Hitchcock.

PV.    5) These   films  include first of all the James Bond series. Hitchcock’s films of this genre feature ordinary people who accidentally become involved with spies or other evil doers. (Detective and spy films)

P VI.  6) These films increasingly suggested that  the dangers of the future stemmed from what human beings were doing in the present. (Science fiction)

PI.  Charlie Chaplin (Charles Spencer) (1889-1977) – an English actor and director who worked mainly in the USA in silent black-and-white comedy films.

 

PII. Sir Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) – an English film maker who worked  mostly in the USA. His films are known for the terror experienced by people watching them.

 

PIII. Steven Spielberg was born in 1946, he is a film director who has made many

very popular films, including “Jaws”, “Star Wars”, “Empire of the Sun”, etc. His

films are well known  for being very fast-moving and  full of exciting action.

 

PIV. Kevin Costner (1955) – an actor and director whose films include “Dances with Wolves”, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”.

 

PV.  Barbara Streisand (1942) – a singer and actress who has performed on stage and in many successful film musicals, including “Hello, Dolly”, “The Way We Were”, etc.

 

PVI. Arnold Schwarzenegger (1947) an  American actor, born in Austria, whose body-building appearance won him the titles of Mr. Germany and Mr.Universe.

He is best known for his part in the film “The Terminator” in which he plays the hero.

 

PVII. Walt Disney (1901-1966) – a film producer, especially of animated cartoons. His studios are especially known for meticulous craftsmanship in animated films. The Disney studios have also produced nature films, feature-length films with live actors and  television programmes.

 

Another popular way to have a good evening is going to the theatre. There are a lot of different theatres in the UK, in the USA and in Russia.

P.1 At theatres people can see dramas, tragedies, comedies, operas, ballets, and other performances. Many great playwrights in the world wrote plays which were

staged at  theatres all over the world.

 

P.2 In England the greatest of them was William Shakespeare (1564-1616). He wrote 37 plays. Many of them, namely   “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Hamlet” and others are being staged in many countries even today.

P.3. Later on in the 19th century two other playwrights became famous – Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) and George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). Even now people greatly enjoy G.Swa’s play “Pygmalion” which is very popular in many countries.

 

P.4 At the same time in Russia many theatres in different cities and towns stag wonderful plays written by Gogol, Ostrovsky,  Chekhov and many, many other authors of the past.

P.5 At our marvellous opera and ballet theatres – the Bolshoi in Moscow and the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg people can listen to wonderful operas and see brilliant ballet. Up to now Tchaikovsky’s operas and ballets such as “Eugene Onegin”, “Sleeping Beauty” and Mussorgsky’s   opera “Boris Godunov”, have been a great success in our country and abroad. 

 

P.6 The spectators of theatre performances admire everything, including first – class acting of actors and actresses, fascinating scenery and costumes, beautiful music, voices and dances, curious plots and surprising work of the producer.

 

T.  Listening Comprehension:

  There are today about 200 professional theatres in Britain. The centre of theatrical activity is of course London, where there are some 40 principal theatres in the West End and several more in the suburbs. Among the companies receiving government grants are the Royal Shakespeare Company , the National Theatre  Company ,the English  Stage Company ,the Covent Garden Opera House and the Mermaid [`mә:meid].

    There are many theatres in Russia, but the most famous of them are in Moscow. The Bolshoi and the Maly Theatres are famous all over the world. Late in 1988, a Detective Theatre appeared in Moscow. It is directed by Vasili  Livanov ,an actor, producer and writer. It was he who played the title role in the television serial “Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson” and this work brought Livanov and his partner in the film actor Vitali Solomin round to the idea of creating a theatre.

 All theatres differ from each other. They have their own plays, their actors and actresses. But on the other hand all the theatres have a box-office, a cloak-room and almost all theatre performances begin at the same time in all theatres  all over the world.

-I prefer evening performances which start at 7 o’clock sharp after the third bell.

-I usually have seats in the stalls (партер)

-I always leave my coat in a cloak- room.

At our lesson we’ve talked about cinema and theatre in our life. We’ve known about cinemas, actors, film corporations and theatres in Britain, Russia and in the USA. But I think the pupils from your form prefer to watch films on TV and video. There is no theatre in our town and the best way of spending our free time is going to the cinema.
