The environment and you.

T: some years ago the problem of environment was widely discussed in the newspapers, radio and TV programmers in many countries in the world. Now, we also have the problem before us. Why does this problem worry the people of the world? Children use the information you have prepared at home. Who would like to begin? The first group please.

PI: The environment as it known is all living and non-living things that surround us. There are animals and birds, woods and forests, air and water, land and atmosphere. All this may be called natural living conditions and resources. National resources such minerals, oil, wood lands and water are widely used for purposes of home industry and agriculture. That's why the wide use of national recourses upsets the biological , pollutes air, water and soil.

T: Good. I'd like you to ask the question. How can you help to protect the

Environment?

P2: I think the first action is to learn how to become an environment educated person. It means very likely studying man's influence on the nature. The next step in solving problem of environment education is to study ecology because ecology is a science that deals with relationship living things have to each other and their environment.

T: thank you. That's an original idea. Who want to add?

P3:

The world includes a great number of living things around us. But whether large or small. Simple or complex, no organism lives alone. Each depends on others in its surroundings. Ecologists study how to preserve air, land and water and their interaction. They try to find the ways to control the harmful effect of air, and water pollution on the people's life and life of animals, birds and plants. At the end of my report, I'd like to say. If people learn about ecology and environment they will live in greater harmony with the rest of the world.

T: Well done. I think you are absolutely right .The second problem is the Earth is in danger. Children, as you know the words: the world around have many meanings. What do we think about when we use these words? To answer these questions may be that we think first of all about the Earth with it's people and nature. We see before us many things such as large lands and mountains, woods and rivers, blue or cloudy sky, the sun rising or setting on the Earth. We certainly think about living beings, such as animals, birds, and plants. We see the whole beautiful world before us.

Who would like to begin?

PI: As you know, water is important for life on the Earth. It is an oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. There is much water on our planet and at the same time there is little water on it. It is so because very little water on the Earth is good for drinking. So, one of the most important environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. In many places the water is not drinkable.

P2: "water, water everywhere, not any drop to drink said the sailor from Coleridge's poem describing to a friend how awful it was to be without drinking on a ship in the middle of the ocean. It is strange to think that the water around his ship was probably quite saving to drink. It was salty- but not polluted. The sea waters today are much more dangerous. How do you know? Thanks a lot.

P3:1 want to add, there is not enough oxygen in the water. If people drink this water they can die. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water. Thousands offish die every year in such water. I consider this problem very important. Many people try to find the ways to keep seas, lakes, rivers clean and fresh.

P4:1 want to say some words about Lake Baikal, which is situation in our Republic. Lake Baikal is one of the words largest and the most beautiful lakes. It contains a rich variety. The factory was built on the shore offish of Lake Baikal. As a result of water and plants pollution, more than 50 percent of the world's purest water has been ruined. The hole ecological system of the lake has changed greatly. Baikal is dying, the trees are being are slowly killed by the dust and gas emission from the factory.

So, scientists, writers, workers raise the problem of Lake Baikal in the press and before the government. Lake Baikal and its shores have been declared specially protested zone. There is a hope that one of the most beautiful and the deepest lakes in the world will survive.

T: Well done. That a very good point.

T: And now the 3rd problem The Problem of ecology.

About 200 years ago man lived in greater harmony with his environment because industry was still undeveloped. Nature has served Man being the source of his life. Today the situation is quite different.

PI: yes, you quite Vera Alexandrovna.

The atmosphere is polluted with all kinds of technological, agricultural, chemical, nuclear and other wastes. The things we eat, the places we live in, the air around us are made dirty and unhealthy by machines and factories. Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprisers appear all over the world today. The byproducts of their activity, pollute the air, we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on.

T: thank you. I couldn't agree with you more. Who wants to continue? You, please.

P2: I can't accept that every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vat forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. The pollution of air and the world's ocean, distraction of the ozone layer is the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sigh of ecological crises. That's just what I think.

T: Good, who wants to add?

P3: Perhaps we ought to mention to here that pollution is the result of industrialization and it threatens everything living: plants, animals, and people. The most urgent ecological problem today is the environmental safety of nuclear pore station. Nuclear pollution can't be seen, but its effect can be terrible. People all over the world protest against nuclear tests nuclear weapons. If we do not take any action, the possibility of a global nuclear disaster is very real.

Thank you. I agree with you entirely.

P4: After some discussions we agreed that pollution deprives people of fresh air, clean water and fresh food. The examples are numerous: The water of the Aral Sea is polluted and it became much less than some years ago, the Caspian Sea becomes smaller too people from Semey suffer from radioactivity.

International cooperation of scientists in environmental protection has already begun its work.

There are a lot of environmental groups and international organizations. The most famous of them is Greenpeace. T: Thank you children. Your reports are very useful and your ideas are quite good.

The Aral Sea.

More than years go the Aral Sea was bright blue sea with a lot of fish. The Aral Sea the world's fourth largest lake. It is situated between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

The Aral Sea is characterized by a desert continental climate: cold winters, hot summers and rare rainfall. The sea's water temperature for July is -23-25 degrees above zero, and ice forms in November and December when the temperature is 7 degrees below zero.

In 1960 the area of the Aral Sea was 68000 square km. The rivers Amudarya an Syrdarya supplied it with water. But then the water of the rivers was taken for purposes of agricultural irrigation. So the Aral Sea began to dry quickly. The salt and mineral content of the lake rose greatly making the water undrinkable and killing fish in the lake. The fishing industry along the Aral Sea was destroyed. The drying up of the lake led to people's health problems.

In 1989 the Aral Sea was formed of 2 separate parts, the "Greater Sea' in the south and the 'Smaller Sea 'in the north. In 1992 the area of the Aral Sea was 34000square km.

In 1994 Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyztan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan organized the committee to save the Aral Sea. They wanted to help the people living in it's area.

But unfortunately the Aral Sea is perishing today.
