Big Ben.
The Houses of
Parliament is a very large building which stands near the Thames. There are two
tall towers at the corners of the building and one of them is the Clock Tower.
The Clock Tower was built in 1858. The clock has four faces and a very big loud
bell. The man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man was
very tall, and the workers called him Big Ben. So people called the bell Big
Ben too.
The Tower
of London.
The Tower of London
is nine hundred years old. It stands on the Thames. The English kings lived in
the Tower. Then it was a prison where many people died. Black ravens live in
the garden of the Tower. Now the Tower is a museum. The walls of the Tower are
five meters thick. In the museum you can see many old guns. At 10 o’clock every
evening the guards lock the big doors of the Tower for the night.
Buckingham
Palace.
Buckingham Palace is
in the centre of London. The Palace is one of the homes of The Royal family. It
is the place where the Queen meets important visitors such as kings, queens or
presidents from other countries.
Buckingham
Palace is like a small village. There is a police station, a hospital, a bar,
two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. There are six hundred
rooms and three miles of red carpet. About seven hundred people work there.
Trafalgar
Square. Trafalgar Square is in the centre of
London. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle
of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four
bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful
fountains in the square. They are in front of the National Gallery which is one
of the best picture galleries in the world.
