Тема урока: The use of definite article

Цели: 1. систематизировать знания учащихся по теме, тренировать детей в умении вести общение на английском языке в предлагаемых ситуациях, развивать письменную речь.

2. тренировать учащихся в употреблении знакомых лексических единиц и грамматических структур, а также разговорных выражений в монологической и диалогической речи;

3. воспитать трудолюбие

Тип урока: Комбинированный

Вид урока: Наглядный, словесный

Учебно-наглядные пособия: учебник, мультимедийный проектор, презентации, интерактивная доска.

Ход урока

I. Организационный момент:

- Hello boys and girls.

- How are you?

- Who is on duty today?

- Who is away?

- What day is today?

- What date is today?

- What was the homework today?

II. Фонетическая зарядка:

So, at the lesson today we’ll speak about definite articles. First listen to the tape recorder and repeat.

The definite article implies that the speaker or the writer presents a person, a thing or an abstract notion as known to the listener or the reader, litter from his general knowledge, or from the situation, or from the context.

The definite article in its specifying function serves to single out an object or a group of objects from all the other objects (things, persons, animals, abstract notions) of the same kind. The specification is carried out by means of

  1. a restrictive attribute

  2. the preceding context

  3. the situation

  4. the meaning of the noun

A restrictive attribute is most useful in singling out or individualizing an object. It may be expressed by a single word, a prepositional phrase, a participial phrase, or by a clause, all functioning as post modifiers.

Ex: The students in the next room are taking an examination.

An object or a group of object may be specified by reference to the preceding context (backward reference).

This use of the definite article is qualified as anaphoric. The noun with the the definite article may be a more repetition of the noun mentioned before, it may be a final statement prompted by the context.

Ex: My wife always had a passion for owls. The passion is grown since our marriage.

On of the most usual ways of singling out an object or a group of objects is situational specification. Though the object is mentioned for the first time, no attribute or context is necessary for the speaker (or the writer) to point it out and for the listener (or the reader) to understand what object is meant.

Ex: The flowers were splendid.

The definite article in its specifying function is used with unique objects or notions. They are the sun, the moon, the earth, the sea, the world, the universe, the horizon, the equator, the south, the north, the west, and the east.

Ex: The sun sank below the horizon.

The use of the definite article before substantivized adjectives in their collective or abstract meaning is also generic: the poor=all who are poor, the strong= all who are strong, the obvious = all that is obvious, the beautiful= all who are beautiful or all that is beautiful, beauty:

Ex: He has associated with the learned the gentle, the literate and the reasonable both in France and America. Three things will never be believed – the true, the probable and the logical.

Цели: 1. развитие и закрепление лексических навыков по теме. образовательный аспект: тренировать учащихся в самостоятельном употреблении лексики по теме, закрепить грамматические навыки по артиклю, развивать навыки аудирования.

развивающий аспект: развить речевые умения учащихся, внимание, память, умение работать в парах и микрогруппах;

воспитательный аспект: прививать интерес к изучаемому языку, воспитывать взаимоуважение и чувство ответственности.

  1. Part of towns:

The West End, the East End

  1. The capital of Netherlands: the Hague.

  1. Names of public institutions (museums, theatres, hotels, etc), unique buildings and monuments:

The Gate (Gallery), the Metropolitan Museum (Opera), the Grand (Hotel), the White House, etc.

  1. Names of vessels:

The Discovery, the Titanic, etc.

  1. Names of most newspapers (in English-Speaking countries):

The Times, the Washington Post.

Цели: 1. Развивать познавательные способности учащихся, способствующие демонстрации учащимися знаний, умений, навыков. Развивать навыки общения на иностранном языке.

2.Развитие творческих способностей учащихся, наблюдательности, внимания, памяти.

3. Воспитание культуры общения и трудолюбия.

Тип урока: Урок применения новых знаний

Вид урока: Наглядный, словесный

Учебно-наглядные пособия: учебник, мультимедийный проектор, презентации, интерактивная доска.

Ход урока

The absence of any article (the zero articles) is regularly observed with count nouns in the plural, with non-counts used in a general sense, with proper nouns. The indefinite article has no plural form and thus it cannot be used with nouns in the plural in any of its functions.

For ex: Jane is a student. Jane and Mary are students.

Premodifiers of abstract non-count nouns do not influence the use of articles; they only restrict the meaning of the noun, as in: history – English history; music – folk music, classical music; weather – nasty weather, fine weather; advice – valuable advice.

Absence of the article before an originally count noun may suggest a shift in its meaning.

All non-counts can be preceded by the definite article in its specifying function: the art of the nineteenth century, the music of the Renaissance, and also:

What’s the weather like today? How did you like music?

Proper names point out individual objects. When a proper name is preceded by modifier no article is used in case the latter denotes a title, relationship, or rank. Or if the proper name is accompanied by adjectives which sometimes form part of it: Simple Simon, Queen Elizabeth, and President Kennedy.

When modified by other adjectives, not commonly used, proper names may take definite article.

  1. When additional specification is needed: Gloria of 26 was still the Gloria of 20.

  2. When the specifying premodifiers denotes a profession or points out some peculiar feature or temporary state: the puzzled Henry.

  3. Before a group of objects or persons bearing the same name and forming one whole: the Rockies – a group of mountains; the British Isles, etc.

  4. Before proper names formed by means of substantivized adjectives: the Pacific (ocean), the Argentine (Republic), etc.

  5. Before nicknames: the Gadfly, the Scout.
