3 Аудирование текста (приложение 1)

T: OK, we have remembered some facts about Australia and now you will listen to the text about the development of the relations between Russia and Australia and then you will answer the questions.

There are some new words in this text and I want you to look at the blackboard and repeat them after me:

-permanent                    -reign

-sentence                       -flutter

-volunteer                      -provision

-appoint                         -treaty

Listen to the text twice.

The first Russian citizen known to have become a permanent resident of Australia was Peter Potoski.

During the reign of Catherine II he served in the Russian army. He was arrested in England and sentenced to hard labor in Tasmania, where he landed on 18 February 1804. In six years he settled in Hobart permanently.

By 1820 there were four Russian-speaking families of former convicts in Hobart. On 16 June 1807 Aborigines which camped on the northern shore of the Port -Jackson Bay, noticed a small three-mast ship sailing towards the English settlement. A white flag with blue cross was fluttering above the ship.

Thus the first visit of a Russian naval ship  to Australia began. It was the Neva under the command of the captain Leonty Gagemeister.

The 27-year old captain was a well educated man proficient in mathematics and astronomy, could read and write Russian, German, English,  French and Spanish. During his volunteer service in the English Navy the young Russian officer deserved a praise from Admiral Nelson himself.

The Neva loaded provisions on its way to Russian American colonies.

Gagemeister wrote in his report to London:” …the Russians received every supply they wished for; and every respect and attention was shown to the Imperial Flag”

Contacts continued in 1820 when two Russian ships the Vostok and the Mirny visited Port Jackson under the command of Captians Lasarev and Bellingshausen for provisions and repairs during an expedition to explore Antarctica.

Russian ships visited Australia throughout the 19th century and some Russian seamen settled in Australia.

In 1893 the Russian government appointed the first professional diplomat Alexey Dmitrievich Putyata. He organized his office in Melbourne and was buried there.

Diplomatic relations were broken in 1918 after the October Revolution and the separate peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. They were re-established again in 1942 and remain to the present time.
