(‘Holidays’). I am sure you know much about holidays in different countries of
the world. So, every country and nation has their own traditions and
customs. It's very important to know traditions and customs of different
people, especially if we want to know their language. We can't say: " we
know English", if we do not know English traditions. Besides, they are
very important in the life of English people. They are proud of their
traditions and keep them up carefully. That's why we are going to know more
about British holidays today, will learn new words, practice our skills in
reading, speaking, will know more about traditions of the English-speaking
countries. I hope you you’ll enjoy our English
lesson. Please, be active and friendly to each other.

Task 1. Let's
read and guess. What is the holiday talking about?
1. In America it's the most important holiday of the
year. It is a religious holiday and one of the happiest holidays of the year,
because it is the day that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
Every family tries to have a fir tree, which is decorated with colored lights. Children
often hang up large stockings to receive the presents. It is celebrated on the
25th of December.
2. It celebrates the start of a new year. People have
parties through the night. The theatres, night clubs and restaurants are
crowded. In Times Square, in New York, at a minute before midnight, a lighted
ball goes down from one of the buildings. Americans celebrate this Day on the
first day of January, but people begin celebrating on December 31.
3. It is a day of love and friendship. It is celebrated
among persons of all ages. On that day most people send cards in the form of a
heart, candy or roses to people they love. The greeting cards are often
colored, have red pictures of hearts. It is a favorite day for parties,
especially by young people.
4. It is celebrated on Sunday in April or May. The week
before this holiday people color eggs. Little children believe that the Bunny
comes and leaves the eggs for them. That's why holiday’s candy is made in form
of eggs, little chickens and rabbits. Eggs are the symbol of new life. It is a
church holiday. This holiday marks the end of winter and the beginning of
spring.
5. It is a national holiday. It is celebrated on the 4th
Thursday in November. It was first celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrim Fathers,
after their first harvest. Most churches hold Thanksgiving services. This
holiday is a family day. It is customary for all members of the family to
gather at the home of their parents. The family eats a large traditional dinner
which will include turkey and pumpkin pie.
6. It is one of the best holidays for children. It is the
day or evening before All Saints' Day. It is celebrated on October 31. Children
wear masks and colorful costumes. The most popular costumes are ghosts, witches
and skeletons. They dress up costumes and walk door to door in the neighborhood
and shout "Trick or treat! People also decorate houses and schools in the
traditional holiday’s colors: orange and black and set jack-o'-lanterns in the
windows.
Task 2. Speech practice. All about Halloween.
Task 3. Practice active vocabulary. Match the transcription with the
English words and read, pay attention to pronunciation.

see transcription and the words. Match them. S1, please go to the blackboard

T: Do you
know the legend about this symbol? No?... Let’s listen to the irish legend.
Irish legend about jack-o-lantern
According to an Irish tale, an old man named
Jack was scurrying home along a country road when the devil suddenly appeared
beside him. Jack knew the devil had come to claim his soul. As the two walked
along, they came to a tree heavy with big, red apples.
"Wouldn't an apple taste good right
now?" Jack suggested to the devil,
"They’re fine looking apples, for
sure," said the devil. "But they all grow too high for me to
reach."
"Then stand on my shoulders", Jack
said. "Surely you'll be able to reach them".
So the devil climbed up onto Jack's shoulders,
swung himself onto a branch of the tree, and began picking the biggest, the
reddest fruit he could find. Suddenly, Jack whipped out his pocket knife and
carved the sign of the cross on the tree trunk. That made it impossible for
the devil to climb down out of the tree.
"Get me down from here," cried the
devil "and I won't claim your soul for ten years!"
But Jack was far too smart to fall for that.
" I’ll let you down only if you promise NEVER to claim my soul”, he said.
And the devil, desperate to get down, agreed.
But Jack wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
Before the next Halloween, his body wore out, and his Soul needed a place to
rest. He was turned back from the gates of heaven because of his stingy, mean
ways on earth. When he got to hell, the devil shouted "Go away! You
tricked me into promising I'd never claim your soul. I must keep my word. You
cannot enter into hell!"
"But where then shall I go?" Jack
asked.
"Back from where you came", the
devil replied.
"I'll never find my way back to earth in
the dark", Jack cried. So the devil threw him a chunk of coal from the
very furnaces of hell. Jack caught the glowing ember and placed it inside a turnip
he was gnawing on. He has been wandering around the earth with his first
jack'o' – lantern in search of a resting place ever since!
Task 5. Exercises to the legend.
T: Now, let’s do some

b) Jack climbed up onto the devil's shoulders;
