MUSIC IN OUR LIFE 8-th Form

Lesson objectives: to develop students’ skills in speaking on the topic; to involve Ss into communication in groups exchanging opinions on the ideas from the songs; to encourage students to justify their opinions; to provide Ss with opportunities to enjoy music in the class.

Equipment: recordings with different pieces of music, poster paper, dictionaries, texts of the song.

PROCEDURE

INTRODUCTION

(Teacher plays a CD with different pieces of music)

T. Do you like this music? Why if yes? or Why not? (Ss’ own answers).

T. Today we’ll speak about role of music in our life. Do you think music has a power?

(Ss’ possible answers: Music has power, gives us energy; may cause damage; can help you get relaxed etc.)

T. When and where can you hear the music? (Ss discuss it in pairs, teacher gets feedback from the class.)

You know , the role of music in our life is great. Music is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It gives us the unique opportunity to listen to the wonderful combination of sounds,enjoying the text and singers’ talents. Different people enjoy different kinds of music: ckassical, pop-music, juzz, chamber music, symphonic, instrumental etc. Some people are great fans of pop-groups.

How can you account for the large scale popularity of pop-music?

Is it only an entertainment for young people?

What values does the pop music represent?

What video clips do you know? How do they effect you?

2. Group work: T. Of course, young people sometimes imagine themselves as pop singers. They want to be popular, adored. Let’s imagine yourselves in the role of the pop band singers. Pupils are divided into 2 groups.

T. Decide on:

- name of the band$

- name of the people in the band and the instruments you play;

- type of music the band plays.

(Children work in groups, discussing suggested task; teacher asks groups to read out their descriptions).

T. Thank you for your interesting presentation. But we can’t imagine a good band without hits. And even one successful song can make a band popular. Look at these words and phrases from the song. What do you think the song is about?

I have a talent, a wonderful thing

Cause everyone listens when I start to sing…

Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk.

She says I began to sing long before I could talk…

I’m so grateful and proud.

All I want is to sing out loud…

T. Yes, this song is about music/ It’s one of the greatest hits of ABBA “Thank you for the music”. This song has a rhyme in every line. See if you can match the words in column A with rhymes in column B.
