Исследовательская работа учащихся 10 класса по теме "Climate Change. Global Warming" выполнена при изучении раздела 3 (УМК "Enjoy English" М. З. Биболетова) под руководством учителя.
Global Warming. Climate Change
Global warming and climate change are very hot topics today on TV. Lots of scientists, media people and even businessmen express their concern about possible consequences of climate change. Is it just a buzzword or could it really affect our life? (Слайд 1)
Global warming reveals itself in global temperature rise which can affect plants, animals and people in unpredictable way. Why do people talk about it so much? As scientists report, the average temperatures have risen by about one degree in the last 150 years. Do we really need to worry such a little bit? The ice caps of the Arctic and Antarctica are melting. Most researchers insist that even a one-degree rise can start a chain of irreversible damage to the environment. (Слайд 2)
Most people think that the main reasons of global warming are
I would like to talk about influence of global warming on animals in the world and especially in our region.
The hypothesis is: global warming can make lots of animals extinct, which will upset the balance of the environment. (Слайд 4)
Now let’s listen to some facts that will confirm or reject the hypothesis.
Now and again researchers in the Arctic region find a considerable number of dead bears which just float in the sea. The course of their death is drowning. In spite of the fact that polar bears are strong animals and can swim quite well, they are not very good at swimming long distances and at diving. While hunting they prefer swimming among ice floes. When, due to a warmer climate, the water is ice free, they don’t have an opportunity to hunt seals jumping from one ice floe to another. They have to hunt in the water, which is less successful and very risky. A slight temperature rise put the polar bear at risk of extinction. (Слайд 5)
Global warming and some human activities, such as poaching, the impact of pesticides, destruction of animals’ habitat, wars and the pollution of the environment bring some species to extinction. For example, millions of bees’ colonies have died from the virus CCD, which has spread from the territory of Israel. Pesticides and chemicals used in agriculture weakened the immune system of bees. (Слайд 6)
The costliness of ivory leads to the death of about 60 thousand elephants in Africa and Asia every year. (Слайд 7)
Global warming affects animals in our region. Lizards didn’t live in our area some years ago, but now we can see them in our forests and dachas. Some species of fish have come to the Northern Dvina from southern rivers (for example a bald bream).
You can see the names of some extinct animals from the Red Book of Arkhangelskaya region. (Слайд 8)
To find out if people are aware of the problem, we conducted a survey. 12 persons took part in it. Their ages range from 16 to 70. The analysis of the results proves that most people are aware of the problem. Only 3 people out of 12 don’t care about this problem. The most of people believe that some measures need to be taken. But 20 percent are not ready to do something themselves. (Слайд 9)
And so we have studied the results and have come to the conclusion that most of people are aware of this problem, because people understand that wildlife is not able to evolve rapidly, that’s why most of the existing species are under a very serious threat. (Слайд 10, 11)
If we want to understand our prospects and avoid catastrophes and disasters, we shouldn`t ignore the fact that world is getting warmer and should try to find out more about global warming. (Слайд 12)
How can we help our planet?
Save paper. Plant trees. Sort trash. Apply energy saving technologies. Save water. Educate people. Reduce consumption. Our planet is so beautiful and fragile. Let’s help it! (Слайд 13 - 19).
